Featured in The Christmas Eve Murders, Old Man Johnson is a proud resident of Stone Ridge, a hamlet situated in the remote Catskills region of upstate New York. He serves as a key witness for Detective Ryan, and although his fragile grip on reality is slipping, he holds valuable information for the investigation. Given the prominence of the farm in the community, and that it employs a considerable portion of the townsfolk, Old Man Johnson is regarded as something of a living legend.

Old Man Johnson himself is the current steward of Old Man Johnson's farm, a large parcel of agricultural land on the western side of Stone Ridge, complete with a farm shop, serving locally grown and farmed produce. The pear pie made at the farm shop is a firm favorite of patrons of The Orchard Diner on Main Street. The farm has traditionally focused on rearing dairy cattle that graze on the lush pastures of the Catskills region, but has also tracts of land dedicated to fruit and vegetables, and more recently, a pine plantation for growing Christmas trees to meet seasonal demand.

The sprawling farm has been in Old Man Johnson's family for generations. Indeed, he is fiercely proud of his heritage, and believes himself to be a very part of the fabric of the land on which the farm is situated. However, following his accident involving one of his prize bulls, he has passed the day-to-day management of the farm to his son-in law, Doctor Stewart, who is the local veterinarian in Stone Ridge.

The retired farmer provides key observations and crucial local context to Detective Ryan to allow him to navigate the unfamiliar environs of upstate New York, following a series of grisly murders that were discovered in New York Harbor. Old Man Johnson represents the bucolic simplicity of the Catskills compared to the bustling energy of Manhattan. His knowledge points Ryan in the direction of leads that the incoming snow storm is threatening to bury.

While Old Man Johnson appears to have one foot in the past and the other foot rather reluctantly in the present, his direct no-nonsense attitude and means of communication prove a valuable source for Detective Ryan, as he gathers evidence to bring The Christmas Eve Murders case file to a conclusion.
